Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges affecting individuals worldwide. It can feel overwhelming, isolating, and even shameful in some cultural contexts — but it is not a sign of weakness or lack of faith. At My Sakinah, we believe healing is possible and that seeking help is an act of courage and wisdom.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural human response to stress, danger, or uncertainty. However, when feelings of worry, fear, or nervousness become persistent, excessive, and interfere with daily life, they may indicate an anxiety disorder. Common types include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Specific Phobias. Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental health conditions globally and are highly treatable.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Excessive, uncontrollable worrying about everyday matters
  • Restlessness, feeling on edge, or easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
  • Irritability and trouble sleeping
  • Physical symptoms: rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath
  • Avoidance of situations that trigger anxiety
  • Recurring panic attacks (sudden, intense fear with physical symptoms)
  • Fear of social situations or being judged by others

Note: This list is not exhaustive. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, speaking with a mental health professional can help clarify your experience.

How We Can Help

Our practitioners are trained in evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based approaches. We provide a culturally sensitive space where your faith, values, and cultural background are respected and integrated into your healing journey. We work with you to understand the root causes of your anxiety, build coping strategies, and restore a sense of calm and purpose.

When to Seek Help

You should consider reaching out to a mental health professional if your anxiety is interfering with your work, relationships, or daily functioning; if you are using alcohol, substances, or other behaviours to cope; if you experience frequent panic attacks; or if you feel that worrying is beyond your control despite your best efforts. Remember: seeking help is not a sign of weakness — the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to take the means while trusting in Allah.

Helpful Tips

1Practice diaphragmatic (belly) breathing: slow inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6–8 counts
2Limit caffeine and screen time, especially before bed
3Establish a consistent sleep routine — adequate rest reduces anxiety significantly
4Ground yourself using the 5-4-3-2-1 technique (notice 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste)
5Regular physical activity — even a 20-minute walk — can meaningfully reduce anxiety
6Engage in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and prayer as sources of calm and connection
7Connect with trusted family, community, or a professional when anxiety feels overwhelming
8Challenge anxious thoughts by asking: Is this thought realistic? What is the evidence?
