Trauma & PTSD

Trauma is a wound of the heart and mind — one that many in our communities carry in silence, shaped by war, displacement, loss, abuse, racism, or experiences they were told to simply forget. At My Sakinah, we believe healing from trauma is not only possible — it is a sacred act of reclaiming the wholeness Allah created in you.

What is Trauma & PTSD?

Trauma refers to an emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a clinical condition that can develop after exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence — either directly, as a witness, or through repeated exposure (such as first responders or healthcare workers). Trauma is not limited to war or disaster; it includes childhood abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, medical trauma, accidents, and systemic racism or discrimination.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares related to the traumatic event
  • Emotional distress or physical reactions when reminded of the trauma
  • Avoidance of thoughts, feelings, places, or people associated with the trauma
  • Negative changes in thinking and mood: persistent blame, guilt, shame, or emotional numbness
  • Feeling detached from others or loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Hypervigilance: always being 'on guard' for danger
  • Exaggerated startle response
  • Difficulty sleeping and concentrating
  • Irritability, angry outbursts, or reckless behaviour

Note: This list is not exhaustive. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, speaking with a mental health professional can help clarify your experience.

How We Can Help

Our trauma-informed practitioners use evidence-based treatments including Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Somatic approaches. We understand that trauma often intersects with cultural identity, intergenerational experiences, displacement, and faith. We create a safe, paced environment where clients can process their experiences without being retraumatized. We honour the resilience and spiritual resources that many in our communities draw upon as part of the healing journey.

When to Seek Help

Please reach out if traumatic memories are intruding on your daily life; if you are avoiding people, places, or activities because of past experiences; if you feel emotionally numb, disconnected, or constantly on edge; or if you are coping through substances, self-harm, or other harmful behaviours. You do not have to be formally diagnosed with PTSD to benefit from trauma-informed care.

Helpful Tips

1Reach out to a trusted person — isolation is common after trauma but can worsen symptoms
2Grounding techniques (like the 5-4-3-2-1 method) can help when you feel overwhelmed or triggered
3Be gentle with yourself — trauma responses are your nervous system's attempt to protect you
4Establish a sense of safety in your daily environment and routine
5Avoid alcohol, substances, and other numbing behaviours that delay healing
6Engage in gentle, body-based practices like walking, stretching, or breathing exercises
7Connect with your faith through prayer, dhikr, or community — many find spiritual practice deeply grounding
8Give yourself permission to heal at your own pace — trauma recovery is not linear
